Castle Weddings Perfectly in Style

A bride and groom are kissing on the steps leading up to the front of the brick mansion.

You’ve pictured it your entire life: You in your memorable wedding gown. Your hair and makeup styled flawlessly.  And your smitten prince waiting for you to take that special walk down the aisle. All you need now is the perfect backdrop.

Minneapolis is rich in wedding venues. There are event centers, hotels, restaurants, and parks that could complete your wedding dreams. But if you’re looking for something classic and elegant to fit your romantic wedding vision, what you need is a castle.

So where do you go for a castle in the middle of Minneapolis?

The Van Dusen Mansion, a whimsical, romantic castle-like structure in the middle of the city, sits on an estate with unique spaces to help you create a wedding experience in alignment with your dreams. But a stunning venue is just one part of the dream. What you need now are the details to create a unique and memorable experience for you and your guests.

DREAM YOUR DREAM WITH DETAILS

Do you remember William and Kate’s royal ceremony in 2011? How about Harry and Meghan’s in 2018? Weeks afterward, people were still gushing about the tiniest details. The entrances. The tiaras. The dresses. The florals. And, of course, the venues. People love to remember and discuss all the carefully orchestrated components.

But you don’t have to be in line for the throne to have your regal fairytale wedding. Here a few ideas to turn your wedding into a royal affair fit for a castle.

AN INVITATION FIT FOR A ROYAL COUPLE

From the very moment your guests receive an invitation from you, they should already feel the elegance and regal tone of your wedding. Work in a little bit of gold or keep it white on white, if you’re going for something that says old-world splendor and modern luxury. Don’t forget to seal each envelope with wax seals adorned with your and your betrothed’s initials.

KEEP THE FLOWERS SIMPLE, REGAL AND SOPHISTICATED

Having your wedding in a castle is like having a stunning canvas to start painting your dreams. You don’t need much in a beautiful castle, but that shouldn’t stop you from adding details that reflect your style and personality. Choose a part of the castle (for example, big doors or gates) or the garden with the castle or mansion in the background as a focal point. Use flower arrangements to help frame the spot for your ceremony, so all eyes stay on you.

ARRIVE IN STYLE INSIDE A ROYAL CARRIAGE

When you’re planning your wedding, you want to cover every detail to create an unforgettable experience for you and your guests. Few things set the stage more dramatically than a horse-drawn carriage. Cinderella made a statement in a spectacular fashion to her castle in a fine horse and carriage. So why can’t you? Give yourself the royal treatment like this and your guests will be mesmerized.

CONSIDER A LONG TRAIN VEIL TO WALK DOWN THE LONG AISLE

You’ve waited for this day for a lifetime. You want it to have as much impact as possible. So to add another elegant touch, consider wearing an eye-catching long train veil. To keep it flowing smoothly, consider having page boys or other members of the wedding party follow you down the aisle, keeping it in place behind you. A long veil can help frame your wedding as both elegant and regal. And if you’re not sure about the long train veil, just Google “wedding veil” and “royal wedding” images to see if it’s right for your big day.

KEEP YOUR GUESTS MOVING FOR A ROYAL EXPERIENCE THYE WON'T FORGET

Have you ever noticed the various changes in venues during royal weddings? The reason is to awe your guests with multiple experiences on your wedding day. At The Van Dusen Mansion, you can start with the ceremony in our enchanted outdoor courtyard. Then move the celebration to the 19th-century historic mansion for cocktail hour on the main floor. A sit-down dinner will follow under sparkling chandeliers in the ballroom. Finally, end the evening with more cocktails & merriment in the two-level carriage house.

Many higher-end brides like to change their ensembles after dinner to better enjoy a night of dancing. It’s entirely up to you and your vision.

INVITE YOUR GUESTS TO DINE WITH PANACHE AT YOUR WEDDING

Once you’ve taken care of the most important parts of the wedding -- your gown(s), your entrance, and the venue -- it’s time to focus on the details of the feast.

Start with the layout of the tables. Long banquet-style weddings can add an old-world flair. Or choose rounds that seat a smaller number of guests for a more intimate affair. Next, add details to the table. Your centerpieces can either contrast or complement the monochromatic linen with matching coverings on chairs and tables. Try alternate sprawling flower centerpieces with candelabras to give it that elegant rustic feel fitting for a castle. Candelabras in a crystal, silver, or antique gold finish can spotlight the castle vibe. Or go with classic floral centerpieces that highlight the romantic event. As for the dining, we have a plethora of suggestions to fit any budget.
